San Salvador, Jan 22 (EFE): The Salvadoran government asked Parliament today that El Salvador International Airport be renamed after Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero, assassinated in 1980.
Interior Minister Ernesto Zelayandía handed the President of the Legislative Assembly, Sigfrido Reyes, the draft amendment bill to rename the airport, in operation since 1980 about 27 miles south of San Salvador.
Under the bill, this initiative is “to name the El Salvador International Airport ‘Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdamez’.”
Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes announced the initiative on the 16th as part of his government acknowledgment of Archbishop Romero, who was killed by an unknown sniper while saying Mass on March 24, 1980.
On January 16, Funes named the Hall of Honor of the Presidential Palace after Romero, on the twenty-second anniversary of the signing of the Peace Accords that ended the civil war that El Salvador lived between 1980 and 1992.
Zelayandía told reporters that the initiative to rename the airport “is intended to continue the tributes of admiration toward Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero.”
