BENEDICT SUGGESTED ‘UNBLOCKING’ ROMERO’S CAUSE

Pope Benedict XVI suggested that the beatification process of Archbishop Óscar A. Romero should be unblocked even before Pope Francis ordered that it be so, according to the Auxiliary Bishop of San Salvador.  Msgr. Gregorio Rosa Chávez made the revelation in an interview with Fatima Missionaria during a recent speaking tour of Portugal, in which Bishop Rosa carried Romero’s message to Lisbon, Oporto, Braga, Gondomar, and Fatima.  There have been two reports from the Postulator of the Cause” of Romero’s canonization, Bishop Rosa states.  One, which has not been made public concerns a conversation with Benedict XVI, in which he said that Romero’s beatification process should be unblocked,” Bishop Rosa is quoted as saying in the interview, which was published in Portuguese (the other news Bishop Rosa points to is the published report that Pope Francis ordered the unblocking in April this year).
Other interesting notes relevant to this information:
  • Pope Francis met briefly with the Postulator of Archbishop Romero’s beatification cause, Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, on the anniversary of Romero’s death (Palm Sunday this year).  Pictures of their meeting show that it was a very friendly encounter, but the content of their discussion is unknown.
